Overview

From July of 1997 to the present, the students and faculty of the University of Massachusetts, Lowell, have been participating in a project of cooperation with the communities surrounding the city of Huarmey, in the province of Ancash, in coastal and Andean Peru.

The project has included the installation of solar (photovoltaic) power stations in several mountain communities which lacked any electric power. The electricity has been used to power vaccine refrigerators, lights in the medical posts, and radios for communication between the medical personnel in the mountain communities and the hospital in the city of Huarmey.

In addition to the solar installations, a great deal of good will has been generated by visits to Peru every summer and January which members of the UMass Lowell community have made. Just being in the midst of the people, attempting to understand each other’s reality, and working along side one another has brought us to a place of real cooperation.

We are aiming for sustainable, cooperative, and considered development.
