The Road to Malvas and Cochapeti
This road, with its thirty-two switchbacks, leads from Huarmey, up through Huamba and San Miguel, to Malvas and Cochapeti. The total distance from Huarmey to Malvas, as the crow flies, is about 40 miles. The trip takes about six hours by truck - longer by mule.
Portions of this road wash out each year during the February rains. For several months each year, Malvas and Cochapeti cannot be reached by any vehicle from Huarmey. During this time, the radios and vaccine refrigerators are all the more important.
